Set Up Mercury on Android


Use these instructions to set up an Android smartphone or tablet for the Mercury secure wireless network at CUIMC.

Overview

Setting up Mercury on an Android device involves the following:

  1. Download and Install the QuickConnect app - the free app is needed to register for and use Mercury. For Android devices this must be done before registering for Mercury.
  2. Register and Set Up Mercury - this can be done either on campus in a supported wireless location for guest-net, or from off campus when using VPN.
  3. Connect to Mercury - this can only be done when in range of mercury wireless on campus.

Download and Install QuickConnect

  1. Open the Play Store from your list of apps.
  2. Search for QuickConnect, and install ClearPass QuickConnect by the vendor Aruba Networks.
  3. NOTE: If you're reconnecting to Mercury, make sure you are using the most recent version (offered my the Google Play Store), and that you have removed any older version that may already be installed on your Android device.
  4. After QuickConnect is installed, tap Open.

  5. A QuickConnect window will open. Review the window carefully before continuing:
    1. If you see a generic "QuickConnect helps you configure your phone..." message, DO NOT click OK; instead tap your device's Home button and continue to the Register and Set Up Mercury instructions below.
      • QuickConnect will run in the background as you continue with Mercury set up.
      • If you click OK at this window it will launch your device's web browser and show an error message. Simply close the browser window, tap the home button on your device and continue with Register and Set Up Mercury instructions.

    2. If you see "Please select a network to configure" with Columbia University Medical Center listed, tap Columbia University Medical Center. Your device's web browser will open and prompt you to log in, skip to Register and Set Up Mercury instructions below to continue.

Register and Set Up Mercury

  1. To register, your Android device must either be:
    • On campus and connected to guest-net wireless.
    • Connected to any off-campus network (including cellular) with VPN.
  2. Open the device's web browser (the default browser or Chrome are recommended) and go to https://www.it.cuimc.columbia.edu/mercury.
    If the page doesn't open please make sure you are connected to guest-net or VPN.
  3. Enter your UNI and its password, then select Log In.
    TIP: your UNI is the same login used for myColumbia or Student Information Systems.

  4. After logging in, you will see instructions for QuickConnect; select the blue link at the bottom that reads I have already installed QuickConnect.
    NOTE: If you did not you can tap the Install QuickConnect button, which will open the Play Store - follow prompts to download and open QuickConnect and return to the Mercury registration form to continue. Mercury form with "I have already installed QuickConnect" highlighted
  5. At the next page, select the link to Install Network Profile.

  6. The ClearPass QuickConnect app will appear and display the status of the installation. Tap Allow at any prompts for access to your device.
    If this does not appear (some devices may simply download the network profile without launching QuickConnect to install it), please try steps for the Alternate Install Network Profile at the bottom of this page.
  7. A success message will appear. If you are in range of the mercury network, the Android device will connect automatically.
  8. Close QuickConnect and return to the web browser. It will show a Device provisioning complete message; you can close the browser.
  9. Go to Settings, then Wi-Fi, find guest-net (if you were using VPN to set up mercury it may not be listed) and remove it: tap on an (i), details or other link by guest-net to select any remove network or forget option.

Connect to Mercury

  1. To connect to Mercury wifi, your device must have successfully completed the Register and Set Up steps above, and must be in a supported campus location.
  2. Enter your device's Wi-Fi settings: select Settings from the home screen or list of apps, then Wi-Fi
  3. Tap mercury from the list of wi-fi networks.

  4. Your device will show mercury as Connected in its list of Wi-Fi networks. To disconnect, tap the Wi-Fi toggle button to off, or select a different network.

Alternate Install Network Profile Steps

Please try this if your device was not able to complete step 6 of the Register and Set Up Mercury instructions above.

  1. After installing QuickConnect, use the Firefox web browser on your device to open https://it.cuimc.columbia.edu/mercury.
    If Firefox is not in your list of apps, please install it from the Play Store.
  2. Log in with your UNI account, select the I have already installed QuickConnect link, then the Install Network Profile button (steps 4 through 6 of the Register and Set Up Mercury instructions above),
  3. At the Complete action using prompt, select ClearPass QuickConnect and Just Once.

  4. The ClearPass QuickConnect app will appear and show installation status. Return to step 7 of the Register and Set Up Mercury instructions above to complete Mercury set up.
