Setting up lists in Outlook's Junk Email Options can help you prevent unwanted messages and ensure you always receive emails from certain addresses.
Safe Senders: add a sender's email address to this list to ensure that messages they send you will reach your inbox, without being quarantined.
- Email from someone on your safe list will still be blocked if it is known spam, phishing, or virus/malware infected.
- Any encrypted emails or password-protected attachments or encrypted will be placed in quarantine because these cannot be scanned for malware.
Blocked Senders: add a sender's email address to this list to block all future messages they send to your email uni@cuimc.columbia.edu email address.
To view and manage your lists:
Outlook 365 Web Client
- In your email box view in Outlook, click on the cog ⚙️(Settings) at the top right of the screen, next to your account's avatar.
- Toward the bottom of the window, find and click "View all Outlook settings" (Alternatively, you can go to https://outlook.office.com/mail/options/mail/)
- The "Mail" option should be highlighted at the left, under "Settings." Choose "Junk email" in the middle menu.
- From the window that opens to the right, you can view and manage your Safe and Block email lists:
Note: notice the option at the bottom of the page (under the "Safe senders and domains" list). You can:
- Choose to only accept emails from the people on your safe list
- Automatically place any contacts in your address book in the safe list.
Outlook 365 Windows Client
- Under your "Home" tab in Outlook, locate and click "Junk."
- Locate "Junk E-mail Options..." and click.
- You will now see a "Junk E-mail Options" window with tabs for the Safe and Blocked Senders.
Note: Safe recipients are email addresses of people you don't want to block from receiving your emails. This is usually used in email groups you're a member of, where an email address can belong to an automated service or a list. Usually, this list will be a copy of the Safe Senders list.
Outlook Mac Client
To block a sender from sending emails to your inbox and automatically place them in the Junk folder:
- In your Outlook Inbox, Locate the email you want to mark as junk and right-click or hold the Ctrl key while clicking.
- From the menu that opens, choose "Report Junk," then choose "Block."
To mark a sender as safe so emails from their address will be placed in you Inbox:
- Navigate to the Junk folder in Outlook
- Locate the email you want to mark as safe and right-click or hold the Ctrl key while clicking.
- From the menu that opens, choose "Report Junk," then choose "Not Junk."
