Using Block and Safe Sender Lists in Outlook


 Setting up lists in Outlook's Junk Email Options can help you prevent unwanted messages and ensure you always receive emails from certain addresses.

Safe Senders: add a sender's email address to this list to ensure that messages they send you will reach your inbox, without being quarantined.

Blocked Senders: add a sender's email address to this list to block all future messages they send to your email uni@cuimc.columbia.edu email address.

To view and manage your lists:

Outlook 365 Web Client

  1. In your email box view in Outlook, click on the cog ⚙️(Settings) at the top right of the screen, next to your account's avatar.
  2. Toward the bottom of the window, find and click "View all Outlook settings" (Alternatively, you can go to https://outlook.office.com/mail/options/mail/)
  3. The "Mail" option should be highlighted at the left, under "Settings." Choose "Junk email" in the middle menu.
  4. From the window that opens to the right, you can view and manage your Safe and Block email lists:"Outlook web application open, with navigation highleted and pointing to Mail: Junk email options"

Note: notice the option at the bottom of the page (under the "Safe senders and domains" list). You can: 

Outlook 365 Windows Client

  1. Under your "Home" tab in Outlook, locate and click "Junk."
  2. Locate "Junk E-mail Options..." and click.
  3.  You will now see a "Junk E-mail Options" window with tabs for the Safe and Blocked Senders.

Note: Safe recipients are email addresses of people you don't want to block from receiving your emails. This is usually used in email groups you're a member of, where an email address can belong to an automated service or a list. Usually, this list will be a copy of the Safe Senders list.

Outlook Mac Client

To block a sender from sending emails to your inbox and automatically place them in the Junk folder: 

  1. In your Outlook Inbox, Locate the email you want to mark as junk and right-click or hold the Ctrl key while clicking.
  2. From the menu that opens, choose "Report Junk," then choose "Block."

To mark a sender as safe so emails from their address will be placed in you Inbox:

  1. Navigate to the Junk folder in Outlook  
  2. Locate the email you want to mark as safe and right-click or hold the Ctrl key while clicking.
  3. From the menu that opens, choose "Report Junk," then choose "Not Junk."
